back pain

I am 25 years old and have been playing tennis since I was about five.  I played competitive tennis in college and have experienced lower back pain on and off throughout my career.  I am interested in picking up golf but am still worried that it may irritate my back.  I have only played a few times and it seemed to be okay.  Any suggestions/tips to help prevent or treat back pain?

Re: back pain

Hi!  I have been playing golf for many years and have also experienced lower back pain on and off.  Low back pain seems to be a common injury for golfers but is definitely preventable.  Like any other sport, it is very important to warm up before you step out on the course.  My pro suggested that I start by stretching the most important muscles that may cause back pain including my hamstrings, hips and torso and then progress to taking easy practice swings.  He also suggested starting out on the driving range before hitting the course. Hope this helps!

Re: back pain

I have had similar back problems!  I highly recommend using a caddy or taking a cart rather than trying to carry your own bag.  If you do insist on carrying your own bag, make sure you use the ones with two straps so all of the weight is not placed on one side.

Re: back pain

Along with flexibility, strength is also important both in the lower back and the abdominals to help prevent injuries.  I found a website with some great exercises.  Check it out!  www.sportsinjurybulletin.com and search for lower back rehabilitation exercises.
