Professional Club Fitting Advantageous for Women Golfers

Aug 30, 2010

Due to the sheer number, choosing the right golf clubs can be an immense undertaking. While it is always nice to have different options, the chances of a golfer making the wrong selection increases with a greater number of choices. Since the selection of proper golf equipment is critical for a golfer’s success, Teresa Zamboni, the LPGA’s 2007 Teacher of the Year, suggests keeping four things in mind when selecting clubs—proper length, proper lie angle, correct shaft flex, and how the club looks when addressing the ball. While the final point is more of a personal preference, Zamboni advises seeking professional help when shopping for clubs.

Professional club fittings can either be dynamic or static. A static fitting involves taking different measurements to find out things such as which club length or grip size are most suitable for an individual. A dynamic club fitting is performed by hitting balls at the practice range while being observed by a professional who is knowledgeable about women’s golf equipment. By using clubs with differing shaft flexes, lengths, and grips, the swing, stance, lie angle, and flight pattern can all be analyzed. Armed with this information, the professional can determine the proper club length, lie angle, and shaft flex for your individual swing. Once the proper fit is established, you can determine which of the recommended clubs feels best and which one looks most natural when addressing the ball.

Considering all available options, Zamboni feels that the innovative hybrid club is a good choice for many women golfers. The hybrid club, which has the look of a wood but the length and loft of an iron, makes getting the ball airborne easier. Because the hybrid clubs are gaining in popularity and they may make the game easier for some players, golf club companies have developed full hybrid sets in addition to the traditional sets consisting of woods and irons.

Whether you use traditional clubs or hybrid clubs, an improper fit will adversely affect your game and body. According to Zamboni, when you swing with improperly-fitted equipment, you may inadvertently adjust your form and follow-through, which can be difficult to fix if you start swinging with properly fitted clubs. Properly-fitted clubs can lead to speedier improvement with practice and a lower risk of injuries. Protect yourself and make the game of golf a little more enjoyable in the process—get professionally fitted for your golf clubs.
